The Power of Us: From Should to Song – A Journey with Frances

There’s a beautiful alchemy that happens when two souls meet in resonance—and that's exactly what unfolded when I connected with the radiant Frances, a pianist, singer-songwriter, and wholehearted creative force. In our latest Power of Us conversation, we explored what it means to step out of the noise of “should” and into the symphony of self-expression.

Embracing the Voice Within

We opened by honouring the sacred space of the throat—the portal for truth, tone, and tenderness. Frances and I both know the vulnerability that comes with being vocal. It’s not just about the words or the melody, it’s about daring to speak from the depths, even when your voice shakes. In this shared stillness, we reminded ourselves: presence is power.

Letting Go of "Should"

Frances spoke vulnerably about a recent transformation—a moment where she caught herself living in a loop of “shoulds.” With the guidance of her yoga teacher and coach, she recognized that this inner script was holding her back. Once she dropped the “should,” something profound happened: clarity, creativity, and collaboration began to flow.

And flow it did.

From that place of self-trust, Frances completed an entire album (yes, in true creatrix style), composed music to my poems, and joined me in one of the most fluid co-creations I’ve ever experienced.

The Magic of Musical Alchemy

When Frances read Light the Way, something stirred. My words spoke to her, not just intellectually but instinctively. In what she described as a “throwaway comment,” she offered to compose music for my poems. That single, tender offering opened the door to an unfolding body of work that is intuitive, feminine, and fierce.

We worked fast. Within weeks we’d created a set list, performed, recorded, and envisioned a new sound together. It felt effortless—because we weren’t trying. We were allowing.

Vulnerability as a Practice

For Frances, vulnerability isn’t a one-time moment. It’s woven into the fabric of performance, presence, and being seen. She reflected on the ongoing dance with doubt and comparison—and how her anchor is always the music itself. “Just focus on the art,” she said. “That’s where the power is.”

As we shared stories of mentors, fear, performance, and the piano, one truth rang louder than any chord: collaboration is the antidote to isolation.

The Power of Collaboration

From a nurturing piano teacher at age nine to the dynamic co-creation we’re now embracing, Frances’ journey is one of trust—trust in self, trust in others, trust in the music.

That’s what The Power of Us is about.

It’s about witnessing one another. Supporting each other into our next evolution. Letting creativity move through us, wild and unfiltered.

What’s Next?

We’re co-creating an album. A music video. A stage performance. And Frances joined the lineup at The Power of Us event on May 22nd at Club Quantum in Tunbridge Wells—a celebration of sound, storytelling, and soulful expression.

This is just the beginning.

Follow Frances on Instagram @francesyong, and stay connected with us both as this music takes flight.

And remember: you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be present. Your voice matters—shaky, soft, bold, or brave.

That’s the power of us.
