I wish I could Sing…
We all can sing - given the right training both for the voice and the mind. Only the rare few are born with a natural ability to sing effortlessly. For others, improving their voices can be a life long ambition and for many, the step to even having a go is suspended somewhere between a limiting belief and being afraid.
The accomplished singer understands that the effort of singing is 95% body and mind and only 5% sound. The secret behind the singer who sings effortlessly is that they do so without thought, happily going along with what is happening. This creates a flowing state of freedom and an open connection to communicating through the music to their audience.
How do we learn to model the skill of excellent singers who perform without thought (or judgement) of one’s own sound and ability? The best way to learn is by having a go! Identifying the resourceful states required for skilful and exceptional performance additionally leads the performer towards their desired outcome of exceptional communication.
The key to unlocking the voice is simple yet complex and utterly intriguing. To be able to sing effortlessly, as great singers do, one needs to allow the body to relax enough so that the muscles are in balance. This consequently encourages the breath to move and support the sound as required.
When the singer masters this relationship between the breath and it’s movement, then the conscious thoughts disappear allowing the sound to miraculously grow. Singing is about letting go, befriending the unknown and being surprised at the body’s natural abilities. Therefore the wish to sing needs to turn into the courage to just have a go.
