From Silence to Song: Deborah Nightingale’s Journey into The Power of US

Finding Voice: Deborah Nightingale

Deborah Nightingale: Finding Voice Through Vulnerability

In the second episode of The Power of US series, Natalie Farrell sits down with performance artist and spiritual creative Deborah Nightingale to share a story that moves from fear and silence into deep expression, healing, and connection. This heartfelt conversation is not just about finding a voice – it’s about rediscovering who we truly are when we allow ourselves to be seen and heard.

Finding Voice Through Vulnerability

Deborah’s path began in the world of dance – a form of silent storytelling. As a young girl at the Royal Ballet School, she internalised fear and perfectionism, particularly under the influence of a teacher whose impact lingered for decades. It wasn’t until a profound therapeutic breakthrough that her inner voice finally emerged. Deborah describes the experience as a spiritual awakening – a moment of lightness and release after years of carrying emotional weight.

“It was as if I had been dragging huge chains throughout my life, and then… the fear had gone.”

Expression Without Edges

This awakening inspired Deborah to launch her own dance company, begin writing, and eventually step into the vulnerable art of songwriting and singing. During lockdown, she bought a piano – an act that became pivotal. The piano became a companion and channel, allowing her to let go of perfectionism and trust in what wished to move through her. Music became not only an outlet but a spiritual practice.

“Expression has no edges and knows no boundaries.”

Deborah’s courage to lean into the unknown reflects the very essence of The Power of US – a journey from fear to freedom, from self-doubt to self-trust. It’s about realising that through expressing our truth, we create space for others to do the same.

Performance as Presence

Her creative evolution reached a milestone with a live performance at The Amelia in Tunbridge Wells, followed by her first recording session on a Steinway piano. Rather than striving for perfection, she allowed the rawness and emotion of her voice to be heard – cracks and all.

“Even with the mistakes, I heard it and I loved it.”

This level of honesty and self-acceptance echoes Natalie’s own journey as a singer, and lies at the heart of the upcoming Power of US event – a space for authentic storytelling, creative expression, and collective healing.
